“Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.”
-- Martin Luther
On a warm spring evening in the Grand Amphitheater, families gather to listen to music performed by the Whitefield Academy jazz band. Grandparents tap their feet to songs of Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini,
and others from their era. A Whitefield pre-K student sits with rapt attention, enjoying the sounds as they float across the pond, while her younger brother runs and plays ball. Teachers, students, and
families share picnic dinners and kettle corn as the band plays on.
Friday-night lights illuminate the turf as Whitefield’s award-winning marching band takes the field at half time. Fans feel the beat as the drum line pounds out the rhythm while color-guard flags twirl
in the air. The members of the band march, snaking past one another, with horns blaring as their program entertains and energizes the crowd.
The concert band takes the stage during Hats off to the Arts night, playing musical selections for the families gathered on the quad. Parents and students mingle as they enjoy the sounds, then drift to
the art galleries to view sculpture, photography, and painting on display in Morris Hall.
These scenes are just a few snapshots of the many performances of the Whitefield band on campus. While music education begins in the Lower School, participation in band begins in Middle School when fifth
and sixth graders choose their music elective in band, orchestra, or chorus. The band program culminates in the concert, marching, and jazz bands which also perform in the community: marching for the
opening of the NYO baseball season, entertaining residents at active adult communities, or playing for a fall festival on the Swan House lawn at the Atlanta History Center. Whitefield students have many
opportunities to perform; these experiences, along with classroom instruction, prepare students for further musical study at the college level and make them competitive candidates for scholarship offers
