Whitefield’s visual art upper school program is designed to provide students
with an opportunity to create visual images and forms while acquiring an
understanding of the importance of visual arts as a valuable and worthwhile
study. Through a variety of artistic experiences, visual art students will
continue to develop their God-given creativity through classroom instruction
and exposure to art history, art criticism and aesthetics. Students will gain
understanding and appreciation of visual communication and learn about its
cultural and historical significance. As students deepen their understanding of
visual art, they will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through
personal artistic expression in a successful and competitive manner. Advanced
students will work to develop a personal artistic style and a body of work or a
portfolio in order to prepare them for future artistic experiences.

The Dramatic Society at Whitefield is dedicated to performance excellence on
all levels - both onstage and off. In November, the cast of Cotton Patch Gospel
will compete in the annual Region One-Act Play Competition, a contest where the
Dramatic Society has received acclaim for the past several years (Best Actress,
Best Actor, All-Star Cast Awards.) Students in the Dramatic Society study all
styles of theatre, from classic to modern, absurdism to serio-comedy, and
everything in between. It is our goal to find the redemption and truth in every
work, so that God may be glorified through the craft of theatre.

The Whitefield Academy Chorale is a men's and women's singing ensemble that
performs all types of choral music in all types of settings. The group attends
choral festivals and workshops and performs several times a year in concerts,
chapels, and community events. Students in the chorale also get to study
non-choral works and attend concerts and recitals of various artists. This
fall, the Chorale will be performing with the Dramatic Society in Cotton Patch
Gospel. The Chorale will also attend the Northwest Georgia Choral Festival and
sing with one of the most prestigious college chorales in the southeast!

The Whitefield Academy instrumental music program began in 1999 with a mixed
nine-piece ensemble. In 2004-2005 there are 120 students in grades 6-12 who
participate in the following ensembles: Marching Band, Concert Band I or II,
Pep Band, Worship Team, Jazz Band and Orchestra. The philosophy of the program
is to develop each child's God-given potential musically and to create
performance settings which display excellence, that above all, give glory to
God.
Whitefield is a member of GISA and GMEA and participates in many state-wide
activities such as All-state, All-Select and other state sponsored festivals.
The instrumental program is very involved in the community as well playing for
senior citizen groups, hotels, conferences, churches and sporting events. All
ensembles perform regularly throughout the year at assemblies, chapels,
meetings, sporting events and a dynamic annual Arts Week event. With 25% of the
middle and high school students participating, music is very popular at
Whitefield Academy!

The Whitefield Middle School art program is focused on continuing the fun
hands-on experience of the Lower School, but expanding the student’s visual
awareness, creative thinking and instruction in the elements of art, the
principles of design and techniques of drawing. The students create
two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects in basically every medium. The
MS Art program works to challenge the student to discover and use their
God-given creativity, to question and develop insights into aesthetic issues,
and to formulate a broader, educated, personal definition of art. The students
will explore the artwork of other times and cultures and how it relates to
their own life and artwork. The ultimate goal is to develop within the student
an appreciation for and love of all kinds of art, and to instill strong
confidence in their own creativity, in their own understanding of what
constitutes art, and in their own judgments about art.

The Middle School Drama department of Whitefield Academy seeks to encourage and
nurture young performers. As the middle school years can be a time of extreme
change and self-discovery, we hope to help students find and develop the
talents that God has given them. Opportunities for involvement include a middle
school drama class and a fall after school production. Drama class is offered
for 7th and 8th graders and covers the basics of acting technique, technical
theatre and application through an in-class play project. The after school
drama production is open to all students in grades 6th through 8th. Students
audition at the beginning of the school year for a role. They will spend
approximately 8 weeks rehearsing in the afternoons for a full-length play,
which is performed in mid-October. Previous productions include “Alice in
Wonderland” (2003) and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (2004) I am very
proud of our middle school actors and am blessed to work with them.

The Middle School Chorus is an important transition from Lower School Music to
the Upper School Voice. Students continue to develop excellent singing skills
through a wide variety of music, including standard choral literature, popular
songs and standards, and hymns and choruses. The Middle School Chorus performs
throughout the year in chapels and seasonal concerts.

The Whitefield Academy Lower School art program is designed to encourage
children to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation by nurturing their own
creative abilities, encouraging critical thinking, and awakening aesthetic
sensitivity. In class children learn about the basic elements of design: line,
shape, color, texture, and space. They are introduced to a variety of art media
and encouraged to experiment and have fun. They also learn about the lives of
great artists and their works. Through this experience they are engaged in the
art making process which encourages individual expression and bolsters problem
solving skills. They acquire knowledge, techniques, and a sense of wonder that
they will draw on throughout their lives.

Curriculum
Lower School music curriculum is about experiencing and learning about music.
Students are exposed to instrument demonstrations, interactive media,
recordings and visiting performing groups. Early grades develop note reading
and aural skills, learn about musical expression and study instrument
groupings. Older grades advance in these areas while also exploring classical
and modern music history. Third grade students tackle note reading on a whole
new level by learning the recorder and in the fifth grade year, students
continue musical development by participating in band, orchestra or chorus.
Performance
Lower School performances are about taking part in enjoyable music and drama
while uplifting our audience with spiritual and encouraging messages. All
grades participate in special Grandparents' Day and Christmas performances
while the Spring Production provides an opportunity for an auditioned cast to
shine. The Celebration Singers combines 3rd-5th grade auditioned singers with
the 5th grade choir to perform for chapels, seasonal programs and community
events.
