Varsity Girls Tennis Earns Spot in State Tournament
With a win in the first round of the region tournament on Tuesday, April 18, the varsity girls tennis team will be heading to the state playoffs on Friday, April 21. The girls are the #4 seed and will be playing #1 seed Wesleyan at Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
The Tuesday region matches saw the WolfPack girls win 3-2 against North Cobb Christian but suffer a 0-3 loss to Walker.
During the Wednesday consolation round, the girls lost 1-3 to Mount Paran, with Hannah Morris bringing hom the win at 2 singles (6-3, 6-1).
"With this match being the third in two days, the girls played incredibly well and looked fresh on the courts," said Coach Tillman Hamilton. "Hannah looked very strong, placing her shots well and keeping her opponent moving all over the court, resulting in a win for the team!"
The team enters the state tournament ranked fourth in the region out of 11 teams, an improvement from last year when the girls did not make it past the first round of the region tournament and did not qualify for the state tournament. The key players will be Keri Quillin at 1 singles, Hannah Morris at 2 singles, and Sherina Thomas at 3 singles.
Keri has won seven out of the 11 matches played this season, playing mostly line 1 singles as a sophomore. Hannah Morris, also a sophomore, has had a strong season as well, winning nine matches out of 11, most of which at line 2 singles, but several at line 1. Sophomore Sherina Thomas has had a successful season playing 3 singles.
"These girls have been incredible motivators and encouragers to this team," said Coach Hamilton. "It will be exciting to see them lead everyone at Wesleyan."
