Duke University recognizes Whitefield 7th graders
Posted: 5/20/2010

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) has invited 7th graders Cole Barber, Grace Langella, Peter Keith, and Marcus Jones to participate in the Duke TIP Academy for Summer Studies. This program offers an exceptional academic and social experience for those students who are amongst the top 5% of academically talented students in their grade level.

Now in its thirtieth year, the program identifies gifted children and provides resources to nurture the development of these exceptionally bright youngsters. A 7th grade talent search is conducted in a 16-state region each year. Over 6,000 junior high and middle schools participate.

Qualified Whitefield 7th grade students (typically over 60% of the 7th grade students)
were invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination as part of this program. Taking the SAT or ACT in seventh grade gives students a chance to practice and become familiar with the exams that play a major role in college admissions.

Cole, Grace, Marcus and Peter all had an outstanding score on at least one section of the SAT test and received an invitation to the summer program. In addition, Cole Barber and Grace Langella will receive additional recognition at a state-level ceremony for their superior performances on those college entrance exams.
