In their opening game, Whitefield edged James Island, S.C. in a very physical game. Our boys showed their mettle throughout, never backing down or giving in, eventually prevailing 74-63. Brandon Reed led the Pack with 26 points as the teams remained virtually even in field goal shooting percentage and rebounds. Rashaad Richardson of James Island notched 31 to be the game’s high scorer, but in the end, Whitefield won the game at the line. Though shooting only 62.2% from the charity stripe, the aggressive offensive play yielded 45 chances, making 28. Meanwhile, James Island was 16 of 23.

The semi-final game pitted against each other what turned out to be the best two teams in the tournament. The opponent was Ballard, a Kentucky basketball power. Ballard dominated the early play and led by 16 at the half. The second half was Whitefield’s and specifically Brandon Reed’s, who finished with 23 points. However, in a frenetic fourth period which saw the Pack vie for the lead, Ballard hung on to win by a final margin of 6 at 58-52. It should be noted that Ballard went on to win the tournament, blowing out their opponent in the finals.

Meanwhile, in the consolation game, after a closely contested first half in which Whitefield found themselves trailing by 1 at 33-32, the Pack defeated Bishop England convincingly outscoring them 35-15 in the second half to take third place. Brandon Reed again led Whitefield with 17, with Cameron Baskerville close behind with 15 and Trey Miller with 12. Two players were named to the All-tournament team: seniors Cameron Baskerville and Brandon Reed.

It is now time to begin the second season and the start of region play. This Friday, the #6 Pack travels to Landmark Christian, followed by the always exciting game against arch rival SACA at home on Saturday evening. Next week, after another region game at Atlanta International, the Pack steps out of the region to play two of the highest ranked teams in the state in 3rd ranked Walton (AAAAA) and 7th ranked Centennial (AAAAA). In the game against Eufaula (6-0, #5 ranked in AAAAA) on Friday, the boys took it to overtime and lost after being outscored 14-7 in the extra frame. Brandon Reed continued his fine early season play, leading the Pack with 26 points. On Friday evening, in a hostile Eufaula, Ala. gym, the girls defeated the reigning state AAAAA champs convincingly 57-36. Sophomore Briana Jones dominated the paint, spearheading the resounding victory with 20 points.

On Saturday, Houston County (Ala.) had little chance right from the start against our surging Lady ‘Pack. A smothering defensive team effort netted many turnovers and led to easy baskets in transition. Senior Daniel Hesse, Junior Molly Burke and freshman Carson Quiros were relentless in their aggressive play and Erichea Barnes, back in the lineup after an early season injury, was everywhere, swiping many a pass. A 30-8 half-time lead ballooned to a 61-18 win with Jasmine Swift taking 16 boards and Caroline Fletcher scoring as well. Whitefield fell behind by double digits in the first quarter, and the early deficit proved too much to overcome. The Pack never quit, however, and turned in its best all-around effort of the season against a talented opponent.

Whitefield trailed by 11 points at halftime but cut the lead to 5 points heading into the final period of play. The team was not able to get any closer due to costly turnovers and missed scoring opportunities in transition, but these mistakes did not diminish an otherwise outstanding effort. Elijah Weems (15 points and 7 steals) controlled the paint, while Max Rieves (13 points and 4 steals) turned in his best performance of the season. Dallas Darling (8 points) hit several big outside shots to help keep Whitefield in the game.

WolfPack wrestlers start strong

The varsity wrestling team spilt their home opener last Friday evening falling to State-ranked Eagles Landing Christian 46-51, but then came back to defeat Our Lady of Mercy 56-24.
