We ask students entering grades nine through twelve to read books specific to the English, History, and Bible courses they will take during the upcoming school year. These readings
will give the students some significant background for these courses, and in some cases actually be the beginning material for a course. We hope that a simple reaction occurs:
the relevance of these books will encourage the students to read them with some care, and from that reading the students will generate some interest in and curiosity about the
courses they will soon take.

As usual with Summer Reading, teachers will expect students to come to the first day of class prepared to discuss these books. While teachers do not expect students to come to
class with the same detailed knowledge and thorough understanding they might gain if reading the books chapter by chapter and discussing each in a class, students should read
with more care and concentration than when reading for leisure. Students should mark passages, names, and terms they think important, and note vocabulary words they do not know.
As well, they should mark parts of the text about which they have questions. We want students to engage these readings, as teachers will engage the students about them. Teachers
will certainly ask students to write about what they read and in some cases, if they choose, test students on the reading. We look forward to reading about and listening to what
the students say.
