Scouting
Troop 554 Welcomes You!
Troop 554 is glad you are here! We are a Boy Scout troop serving the Covered Bridge District. Troop 554 was founded in 2006 at Whitefield Academy. We have Scouts from different schools, faiths, and backgrounds. We are very active in local and citywide services and activities. Our programs always include extended summer camping, high adventure treks, and monthly outdoor activities.
Troop 554 Scouts are highly visible leaders in Atlanta Area Council programs such as Scouting for Food, Scout Show, and local community service project involvement. This legacy is proudly preserved in the example set by our first Eagle Scouts, who will earn their badges in 2007.
Being a Scout in Troop 554 is an honor and a privilege which should not be taken for granted. Things don't just happen. Trite but true, what we get out of our program depends on what we put into it. Every Scout in our troop is proud to be here and does his part to help keep our troop productive and worthwhile. We want you here because you want to be here (not because someone else thinks it's a good idea).

Mission Statement
It is the purpose of Boy Scout Troop 554 to provide for boys an effective program to build desirable qualities of character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to help develop personal fitness. To achieve this purpose, the troop will employ the following methods set forth by the Boy Scouts of America:
Emphasize ideals contained in the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan
Operate under the Patrol Method
Place a premium on outdoor programs
Encourage rank advancement as a way to help boys achieve a greater degree of self reliance, ability to help others, and accept challenges
Provide active adult involvement to serve as role models
Foster personal growth through the Good Turn, Service Projects, and the Religious Emblem program
Instill leadership development through practicing citizenship and a formal skills training program
Affirm commitment to these methods via enthusiastic display of the scout uniform as prescribed by the BSA
In so doing, our troop can help to develop young men who:
are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit.
have a high degree of self reliance, initiative, courage, and resourcefulness.
have steadfast personal values based on religious beliefs.
have the skills and the desire to always help others.
Meeting Information
We meet weekly on Tuesday from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Lower School Student Activity Center (LSSAC) at Whitefield Academy, One Whitefield Drive, Mableton, GA 30126
Questions Most Frequently Asked About Troop 554 ...
Money
The registration fee is $125.00 for each Scout per school year. (Financial arrangements are available.) This pays for registration at Scout headquarters, all badges and awards, a year's subscription to Boy's Life, and use of troop equipment. For camping trips, the troop supplies patrol cooking equipment. It does NOT, however, pay for food or personal camping equipment; e.g., pack, sleeping bag, personal mess kit, etc.
Word From the Committee Chairman
This is your Troop 554. Our troop is run entirely by volunteers (like you). It takes a lot of work to keep our troop operating smoothly. The troop committee chairman, working closely with the scoutmasters, knows what is needed. Volunteer your services to him - he appreciates it. He will ask for you help - offer your time and energy. If our parents don't do it, it will not get done. Don't hesitate to call with your questions or suggestions.
Rank Advancement and Outdoor Program
(a two-part program)
All Scouts should participate in both of these areas of Scouting. It is our experience that Scouts who work only on rank advancement without going on the outdoor activities, quickly lose interest and drop out. The reverse is also true. Please encourage your Scout in both parts of Scouting.
Camping Trips are for Fathers As Well!
Dads, make plans to go on at least one trip this year with the Troop. If you are to be a driver, you are asked to spend the night and go on the entire trip. You will sleep with the adults.
You will be a guest at troop-prepared meals, and are encouraged to help scouts with skills and advice. Please DO NOT "take over" patrol leadership. The patrol leader is primed to do a good job, and you may give him quiet, tactful help, but please remember that this is his chance to learn about leadership. If you find a situation has gotten out of hand, please quietly inform the adult leadership.
There are many reasons to attend a campout in full. You are demonstrating your interest in your son's scouting life. You get to know and support the troop leadership. You get to see the Troop 554 in action. Finally, you are there in the event of an emergency. Relax, smile, and enjoy yourself! Be sure to read over Troop 554's camping policies carefully.
"Fair Weather Campouts?!?"
No such thing in Troop 554! We camp regardless of the weather and there will be bad weather campouts, but this is half the fun of camping. Our more experienced members will teach all Scouts how to care for themselves. While a weekend may possibly be uncomfortable, your son will be well taken care of.
Patrol Method
Troop 554 uses the patrol method, which gives Scouts experience in group living and team building. It places a certain amount of responsibility on them and teaches the Scouts how to accept it through various patrol functions. The patrol leader has a BIG responsibility. His patrol meetings are important, so when he calls to ask for your help, please answer with your support.
