Taught by Whitefield faculty, these courses will reinforce key concepts and study skills and establish a firm foundation from which to approach the upcoming school year. With a variety of course topics, lengths, formats, and prices, your child will have the opportunity to shore up any academic gaps and start off the 2021-2022 school year on the right foot. Middle School Courses for rising 5th-8th graders

Foundations for Math Success (rising 5th and 6th)

This interactive, week-long course will give your student an opportunity to sharpen skills and deepen knowledge on math standards such as operations and algebraic thinking, operations and number sense, fractions, measurement, geometry, and problem solving. It may also be a time for your student to spark a passion in math and gain confidence in his/her skills before the following school year. This math camp will include daily activities and some work for take-home practice. Summer break is a long time to go without practicing math, so why not be able to practice alongside peers in a fun and engaging way?

 

Date: July 19-23, 2021

Time: 9 - 11 a.m. with approximately 30-45 minutes of daily work to be completed outside of class

Cost: $150 per student


Foundations for Algebra Success (rising 7th and 8th)

This interactive, week-long course will give your student an opportunity to sharpen skills and deepen knowledge on math standards such as fractions, algebraic thinking, integers, solving equations, factoring, and problem solving. It may also be a time for your student to spark a passion in math and gain confidence in his/her skills before the following school year. This 2 hours per morning math camp will include daily, face-to-face activities and some online work for practice at home. Summer break is a long time to go without practicing math, so why not be able to practice alongside peers in a fun and engaging way?

 

Date: July 12-16, 2021

Time: 9 - 11 a.m. with approximately 30-45 minutes of daily work to be completed outside of class

Cost: $150 per student


Reading Comprehension Skills (rising 5th and 6th)

This two-week course is designed to solidify and enhance 5th and 6th grade students’ reading comprehension skills. These skills are fundamental to success in higher grades and useful across a variety of academic disciplines. Students will practice reading a variety of text styles that will boost their engagement and excitement in reading. This course is designed to occur in two phases: one week in June and one week in July and students will be required to attend BOTH phases for maximum impact. This course will primarily use face-to-face instruction with some reading support provided using highly effective online tools.

 

Date: BOTH June 7-11 AND July 12-16

Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. with approximately 30-45 minutes of daily work to be completed outside of class

Cost: $250 per student

Upper School Courses for rising 9th-12th graders

Algebra (P)Review (rising 8th, 9th, and 10th)

Preview what is to come or review those things you have already learned in this skills-oriented, primarily face-to-face Algebra skills course. This week-long course is designed to prepare students who realized some skills gaps over the course of 2020-2021 and will prepare students who are coming out of Algebra 1 or preparing to take Algebra 2. We will meet 2 hours every morning for one week and you will emerge from this class with a better understanding of the skills necessary to succeed in your Algebra courses over your Upper School career. Skills covered include graphing and writing linear functions, properties of exponents, radicals, factoring polynomials, and solving quadratic equations.

 

Date: June 21-25, 2021

Time: 9 - 11 a.m. with approximately 30-45 minutes of daily work to be completed outside of class

Cost: $150 per student


Research and Study Skills: Humanities Essentials (rising 9th)

This multi-week course combines the best of online learning and face-to-face instruction, and it is designed to prepare rising 9th grade students for the study and research skills that will be demanded of them during their 9th grade humanities courses. There will be three mandatory on-campus days designed to be highly interactive and allow students to present work and receive feedback on that work. The rest of the time students will be working at their own weekly pace to complete the learning modules designed by our Whitefield instructors.

  • June 3, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • June 23, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • July 19, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Cost: $250 per student


Research and Study Skills: Foundations for STEM Success (rising 9th, 10th, and 11th)

This week-long course is designed for students who would like to provide themselves with a strong foundation for success in Upper School math and science courses. This course is a combination of face-to-face and virtual instruction. We recommend rising ninth, 10th, and 11th grade students consider this course. Brush up on your critical thinking by using science scenarios to decide what math skills best solve problems. This course is designed to be approached using some of the virtual skills you’ve gained over the last year, as well as the best features of face-to-face instruction. There will be two on-campus intensive days, and three on-line learning days. Foundations for STEM success will challenge and support you in your efforts to be fully prepared for your Upper School STEM courses.

 

Date and time: June 7-11

  • Online learning: June 7, 8, and 10
  • On-campus learning: June 9 and 11from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cross-Cultural Fit (rising 9th and 10th)

Get your Spanish language skills into shape through this one-week Spanish language, skill development course. This week we will prepare students for using Spanish in real-world scenarios, with the goal of having them ready and excited about learning Spanish in their upcoming courses. Ideally designed for students entering ninth or 10th grade, students will be taught in a blended fashion that couples the best of virtual learning flexibility with the best features of face-to-face learning to provide maximum flexibility in when and how we learn.

 

Date: July 26-30

  • On-campus learning: July 28 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Online learning: July 26, 27, and 29

Cost: $150 per student
