On any given day, you may walk into a second-grade class and find students sitting on exercise balls, stools, or even the floor reading. This is not unusual, but normal for these students as they spend about 30 minutes a day reading independently. Known as Readers Workshop, this time gives students the opportunity to use digital as well as traditional books to do a number of things including; animal research and finding evidence to support a fact. This time also allows teachers to meet with small groups to work on specific reading strategies and skills that are taught as whole-group lessons.  Additionally, student choice of flexible seating options during Readers Workshop, allows students an opportunity to own their learning.
