On April 24 students in grades nine through 11 were recognized for their academic achievements during the Upper School Academic Honors Assembly. Departmental academic awards as well as scholar awards were presented in addition to the Ephesians Award for Service, Timothy Award for Character, Academic Excellence Awards, and the Valentine Award for Leadership and Mentoring.

Christopher McDonald, chair of the Science Department, presented the academic awards. The two types of awards given for academic recognition are the excellence award and the teacher’s award. The excellence award honors the student with the highest grade in the course. The teacher’s award is given to the student who exhibited extraordinary effort, attitude, participation, and a willingness to learn.

All of the 10th-grade took the PSAT 10 in January. The top PSAT scorers this year were Chase Watson, Scott Hellier, Byran Holsinger, and Isabelle Jordan.

Eleventh-graders Annie Edwards, Everett Sinclair, and Devin Wade met the requirements to enter the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program based on their PSAT scores in October 2018. With an estimated selection index score of 212 or above, these high performing students have shown excellent academic potential. From approximately 1.5 million program entrants, these students are among the 50,000 highest scoring participants.

The Ephesians Award recipients were ninth-graders to Hampton Scott, 10th-grader Lexi Kantor, and 11th-grader Hailey Blu. The Ephesians Award is presented to a student in each grade who is most enthusiastic about ongoing community service throughout the course of the school year.

The recipients of the Timothy Award were ninth-graders Iyanna Robinson and James Patrick, 10th-graders Abigail Farrar and Joel McKinney, and 11th-graders Paulina Bilotti and Kelsey Wilson. The recipients of the Timothy Award are young men and women of character, voted by both the students and faculty, who set the best example for his or her peers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity. One boy and one girl from each class are selected. In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he wrote (I Tim. 4:9-12), “This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.”

Dr. Kevin Bracher, head of schools, presented the Academic Excellence Awards to the students who have achieved the highest overall cumulative average in each grade.

Kaylee Burnett, 10th-grade
Devin Wade, 11th-grade

The final award presented during the Honors Assembly was the Valentine Award. The Valentine family scholarship award was established by Keith and Sandra Valentine, parents of 2004 graduate John Valentine. Established to encourage and reward Whitefield students who reach out to underclassmen, the $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a rising senior who demonstrates leadership as a mentor to his or her lower classmen as chosen by the upper school faculty, coaches, and administration. This year’s award was presented to Everett Sinclair.

Congratulations to all of our award recipients!
