Vinings resident and Whitefield Academy senior Brooks Merkle has been named as a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American for the second year in a row. This distinction is awarded to USA Swimming athletes who excel both in the classroom and in the pool by maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and who achieve the required time standard in a single event. This year, just 51 swimmers from metro Atlanta qualified for the Scholastic All-American team.

Merkle qualified with both short course and long course times for this achievement. He is a member of the National Team at Dynamo Swim Club of Atlanta and has been part of the WolfPack swim team for the past three years. He won third place for Whitefield this year in the GHSA state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke and third this summer in the Speedo Long Course Sectionals in the 200-yard breast stroke, where he swam against current University of Georgia swimmers.

Merkle’s qualification times were:

100 Breaststroke
SCY  (short course yards) - 56.33
LCM  (long course meters) - 1:04.08

200 Breaststroke
SCY - 2:04.79
LCM - 2:19.79

His long-term goal is to swim at a Division 1 college after he graduates from Whitefield.
