Dear Whitefield Community,

As you know, our Lower School Principal Jeannie Brostrand announced her pending retirement last spring and she will be leaving us at the end of this school year. Since Jeannie’s announcement of her departure, we have been diligently working to secure her replacement. I am excited to announce that Ms. Maryellen Berry will join Whitefield Academy as Lower School Principal beginning July 2018.

Maryellen currently serves as Upper Elementary Division Head at Trinity School in Atlanta, a role she has held since 2008. Prior to 2008, Maryellen served Trinity as a teacher, counselor, and curriculum coordinator, as well as teaching in Florida and Virginia. With a B.A. in elementary education from Stetson University and a M.S. in elementary education from State University New York at Cortland, Berry has followed her calling as an academic leader and will be bringing more than 30 years of experience in education to Whitefield.

Maryellen is already a member of the Whitefield community as her daughter joined our seventh-grade class this year. When asked about Whitefield, she shared: “As I sought a school for my daughter, I gained even more evidence of the intentional ways in which the mission of Whitefield Academy is carried out. I am drawn to work at a school that esteems excellence in education and the development of students’ character and faith. The opportunity to serve God wholly with every part of me creates joyful anticipation. As Lower School Principal, I will be able to do what I love – enable young people to grow in their relationship with God as they build a strong academic foundation for life.”

Thanks in great part to Jeannie Brostrand’s leadership, the Lower School at Whitefield is an incredible environment in which students are known, loved, and challenged to learn and grow. Under Maryellen’s leadership, we’ll continue to build on this foundation. Her passion for collaboration and experience in a variety of educational roles will be invaluable assets to the Lower School team.

Maryellen’s transition into her role at Whitefield will be aided by Steve Henson, who will continue as Lower School assistant principal in the 2018-2019 school year. Throughout the current school year, Steve has provided support to all members of our Lower School team while building an intimate knowledge of Lower School administrative tasks. I remain impressed by Steve’s contribution to our community and relational leadership style, and I am pleased with the knowledge and wisdom he will continue to bring to the Lower School community.

As we continue the 2017-2018 school year, we’re looking forward to celebrating the legacy of Jeannie Brostrand, who has been a member of the Whitefield team since 2002, serving as Lower School principal for the past 12 years. Jeannie’s faithful service, dedication to excellence, compassionate spirit, and heart for the Lord have had an impact on many students, teachers, and families. Stay tuned for opportunities to share your gratitude for her years of service and wish her well as she transitions into serving God’s kingdom in a different way in the coming years.

As we get closer to the end of 2017-18, we will provide opportunities for you to meet and get to know Maryellen Berry. I am confident she will be welcomed warmly and with great enthusiasm by our Whitefield community.

In Him,
Kevin Bracher
Head of School
