Smyrna Police Officers Louis Defense and Heather Clements as well as Whitefield's own Chief Mitch Plumb recently visited Mrs. Carmichael's seventh-grade English class to share the process of investigation.

Students learned that reading, questioning, listening, analyzing, organizing, and reflecting are all part of creating solid claims in an investigation. Most importantly, the officers shared that claims can not be made without evidence and that preparations for a counterargument should always be made.

This classroom experience paralleled with the “literary detective” theme the seventh-grade English classes are studying and reinforced to the students that these investigative skills are necessary for close analysis and response to the text.
