A Nurturing Environment Where
Young Learners Can Thrive

Every child is different. Some come bounding into the classroom on the first day, while others take time to settle in. At Whitefield Academy, we create a learning environment that meets each student where they are.

Two Educators in Every Classroom

Every PreK and kindergarten classroom at Whitefield Academy includes both a lead teacher and a full-time associate teacher who remain with their class throughout the year. This allows us to give each child individual attention and a secure, responsive learning experience from the very beginning. With PreK class sizes typically ranging from 14 to 16 students and kindergarten classes ranging from 14 to 17 students, teachers have the time and capacity to connect deeply with each learner.

Structure That Brings Confidence

Young children thrive when expectations are clear and consistent. Our teachers use predictable routines, positive reinforcement, and steady guidance to help students settle in and feel secure. Whether it’s navigating classroom transitions or solving peer conflicts, children learn to manage expectations and acquire foundational tools for making wise choices and accountability to respond to others with grace, honesty, and care.

Play with a Purpose

In both PreK and Kindergarten, playtime is more than just a break, it’s a vital part of learning. Along with outdoor recess twice a day, students enjoy time for discovery-based play inside the classroom. This kind of open-ended exploration helps them build language, cooperation, and problem-solving skills.

Kindness That’s Lived Out Daily

Our teachers lead with compassion, modeling the same biblical values they teach. That means we respond to mistakes with love and correction.. This biblical approach shapes not just behavior, but the heart.

Our kindergarten program is located on our Lower School campus, which features two age-specific KOMPAN® playgrounds designed to encourage collaboration and gross motor development. With built-in obstacle elements, open-ended climbing structures, and opportunities for multi-child interaction, the playground naturally fosters teamwork and resilience.

What Makes These Early Years at Whitefield Academy Distinctive

PreK

Learning Through Play and Exploration

  • Activities are designed to spark creativity and discovery through hands-on materials, sensory play, and open-ended centers that help children learn by doing.
  • Through Bible stories, songs, and daily prayer, children begin to understand who God is and how deeply they are loved.
  • Through daily math talks, phonemic awareness (auditory rhyming and visual letter-sound recognition), and story time, students develop essential skills that prepare them for foundational learning without pressure to read before they’re ready.
  • Whether a child is new to structured learning or ready to be stretched, teachers provide both small-group and one-on-one instruction to meet their needs.
  • Students build friendships and empathy through intentional classroom play, peer interaction, and social emotional lessons that foster cooperation, compassion, and confidence.
Kindergarten

Academics with a Biblical Worldview

  • Students begin to read, write, and work with numbers using a structured, multi-sensory approach while learning to think critically through a biblical worldview.
  • Thanks to a curriculum that purposefully builds on itself year after year, students leave kindergarten with the skills they need to be successful in first grade and beyond.
  • Kindergarten is the launch point for Whitefield Academy’s focus on putting others ahead of self. Students begin participating in service activities that teach empathy and purpose.
  • Weekly class time with the school counselor helps students learn how to cooperate, show empathy, and care for others. Each lesson is rooted in what it means to live like Jesus.
  • Time spent in the Whitefield Garden helps students make meaningful connections between what they’re learning and how they’re growing in body, mind, and spirit.

Steve Henson, M.A.T.

Lower School Principal

I believe in Whitefield Academy’s commitment to its mission and values, and I have seen how fiercely our leadership, faculty, and staff uphold a passion for learning, others ahead of self, and the living and active Jesus. As a college preparatory school grounded in the scripture, Whitefield approaches all knowledge from a biblical perspective. In Lower School, students are challenged through differentiated instruction and the healthy struggle of learning, while parents are embraced as essential partners in our school community.

Technology That Supports, Not Distracts

In PreK and kindergarten, technology is used intentionally and sparingly. Teachers model how to use tools like interactive displays or tablets, but children do not spend time independently on devices in PreK. In Kindergarten, guided time with technology is introduced in age-appropriate ways to support teacher-directed specific learning goals. The focus remains on human connection, hands-on learning, and the development of foundational skills.

Safety You Can Count On

Your child’s safety, physically and emotionally, is our top priority. Whitefield’s Lower School building is fully secured, with restricted access, a monitored front desk, and four full-time security team members, including an off-duty City of Smyrna police officer on campus each day. Teachers are fully trained in safety procedures, and the school hosts monthly drills.

A full-time nurse is available, and each class carries any emergency medical items a child may need. Our full-time guidance counselor teaches healthy social-emotional skills and works to ensure children are supported from the very first day to the end of the year celebration.
