Middle School

A Christ-Centered Bridge Between Childhood and Adolescence

Grades 5-8

Middle school is a unique and exciting season of growth, change, and discovery. With shifting emotions, growing independence, and profound questions about identity and belonging, these years are pivotal at Whitefield Academy. We warmly embrace them with intention and care.

Our private middle school program is designed to help students move forward with confidence and responsibility. Guided by experienced faculty who understand the nuances of this developmental stage, students are supported in an environment built on our core value: others ahead of self.

At Whitefield, middle schoolers are met with grace and guidance, not just rules and reminders. Our teachers walk alongside students through both the fun and the challenges, offering encouragement, wisdom, and steady support. Whether navigating friendships or learning time management, students are equipped to make wise choices, try again when they fall short, and grow in character.

Everything about our program is thoughtfully Christ-centered. Weekly chapels and classroom discussions reinforce the truth that middle school isn’t just something to “get through”, it’s a pivotal time to grow into who God is calling each student to be.

As they prepare for high school, students at Whitefield experience a culture of connection, a commitment to character, and a campus designed for their safety, growth, and belonging.

Building Toward Upper School, One Year at a Time

Academic expectations increase across the middle school years, helping students grow in organization and independence. Whitefield’s program is designed and scaffolded to gradually build the skills students will need to succeed in upper school and beyond.

Grade 5

Students adjust to changing classes for the first time, taking on more responsibility while still benefiting from consistent support. Through our missional lens, we leverage our executive functioning program to help build essential habits like managing materials, completing coursework, advocating in learning process, and reflective practices.

Grade 6

Research and writing assignments become more complex, and students begin learning how to take notes effectively. They also start developing their voice in class discussions and written work, applying new knowledge with creativity and care.

Grade 7

Increased academic rigor challenges students to dig deeper into topics, analyze texts, and defend their ideas. Teachers introduce Socratic discussions and seminar-style formats that strengthen reasoning, articulation, and respectful dialogue.

Grade 8

Students refine their study habits and critical thinking through cross-curricular projects, more advanced writing, and the continued use of Socratic methods. These experiences prepare them to engage thoughtfully with high school material, collaborate well with others, and contribute meaningfully in any setting.

John Crosland, M.Div., M.A.

Middle School Principal

Whitefield’s approach to faith-integration in the classroom is profoundly intentional and accessible. If parents are interested in investing in their child’s wholistic experience (mind, body, soul), the middle school is a context where students are known, challenged, and coached through one of the most important formational times in their life by Christ-centered followers who love middle school students. With a healthy understanding of where students have come from the middle school to knowing where they are going into the upper school, the middle school model lives out the opportunities of careful and intentional support and stretching of each child.

A Distinctive Middle School

Whitefield’s Middle School program is uniquely designed to support students as they navigate one of the most formative stages of life. Here, your child will experience:

  • Relationally-based instruction that meets students where they are, with active learning strategies, collaborative projects, and real-time assessment. Teachers adapt with flexibility while keeping expectations high.
  • A curriculum infused with curiosity and creativity, including interdisciplinary units and classroom simulations that keep students engaged and invested.
  • Support that equips and encourages, with access to a full-time middle school counselor, learning specialists, and a student support team who walk alongside students as they develop confidence and skills.
  • Spiritual growth that’s rooted in daily practice, from small group devotionals and student-led chapels to biblical connections across the curriculum. Students wrestle with big questions while learning how to live out their faith.
  • Moments that matter, such as the 8th Grade Commissioning and service projects woven into the school year. These milestone experiences help students recognize who they are and who they’re becoming.
  • Opportunities to lead and belong, with arts and athletics, extracurricular activities, and service opportunities across grade levels. Middle schoolers are given space to try, fail, and eventually succeed while being guided by caring adults who cheer them on.
  • Annual grade-level retreats that are intentionally designed to build community, deepen students’ faith, and create space for reflection and growth. Each retreat supports a key milestone in the middle school journey, from stepping into independence in Grade 5 to embracing leadership in Grade 8.

The faculty and staff of the MS have been a wonderful blessing to my family, as the rigor of the curriculum and assignment expectations have increased since 5th grade. From helping me drop off left-behind water bottles and sports clothes, to patiently working with one of my girls to understand complex math concepts, to helping my other daughter draft a heartfelt prayer to pray over her dad and me, our girls feel known and supported. Our family continues to be positively impacted by the genuine concern and Christ-centered guidance of the MS division.”
